The boy in the striped pyjamas

"But there were no other streets around the new house, no one strolling along or rushing around, and definitely no shops or fruit and vegetable stalls. When he closed his eyes, everything around him just felt empty and cold, as if he was in the loneliest place in the world. The middle of nowhere."(12-13)

"...at Treblinka the victims almost always knew that they were to be exterminated and at Auschwitz we endeavored to fool the victims into thinking that they were to go through a delousing process. Of course, frequently they realized our true intentions and we sometimes had riots and difficulties due to that fact. Very frequently women would hide their children under the clothes but of course when we found them we would send the children in to be exterminated. We were required to carry out these exterminations in secrecy but of course the foul and nauseating stench from the continuous burning of bodies permeated the entire area and all of the people living in the surrounding communities knew that exterminations were going on at Auschwitz ."

Treblinka, Daschau, Mauthausen, Sobibor, in which prisoners started a revolt to fight against the fate they were sure to await them, Buchenwald, Bergen-Belsen, Ravensbrück, Belzec...Escape from Sobibor is a film you can see to get some idea...The Wave is also quite interesting as a research on the social phenomenon of Nationalsocialism. Swing Kids is also a fascinating portray on how German youth-and society in general- were cracked in their everyday life.
